Saturday morning was opening day of spring turkey season in the commonwealth of Kentucky. As any good hunter would do regardless of the fact it was below 40degreeeees I got up made myself some coffee and started the typical rituals for a morning hunt. I gathered up article after article of camo, food, watter and all the right equipment for this sport. (High top boots, jacket, face mask, gloves, hat, jacket special pants, and never forget the calls) A big shout out for the new "sassafras box call" that I was given while home in East Tennessee this last trip.

5 AM - I arrive @ the "farm" three of us are going to be hunting this one farm together today. As we start our morning walking toward the back 80 acres we are easing along trying not to spook up an of our game. I take my first post of the day just before day break under a nice cedar tree. My friend and expert turkey hunter Keith King was pulled up in a fence row about 200 yards my North West. The morning began with some easy calling as I watched three hens drag their way into my area of the woods with no promising bird for the day. After about one hour of calling and enjoying the wonderfully cool morning we moved on into a different area of the farm where there had been some more promising gobbles. At around 9:45 am I took a seat next to a large forked popular tree in a good fence row thanks to some well placed calling by my partners there came my prize strutting and gobbling in the bottom of the draw just South of my tree. In a fearful state of spooking a few jakes as I had no choice but stand for a shot on my prize bird. When he took a step behind a large maple tree just 50 yards down the hill from my current position I took my chances. My attempt was successful at getting to my feet with out spooking the other birds, and as that beautiful Gobbler strutted himself out from behind that tree well .... you saw the picture. I became the happy owner of my first true Long Beard.

Due to a long morning in the woods it was and easy decision to return to the farm house for some coffee and warming up before we would return for the evening hunt as I took a post next to an old hay rake and waited out the rest of the evening looking and listening for the next bird.
